A Place Further Than the Universe
Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
Synopsis
Mari Tamaki is in her second year of high school and wants to start something. It's then that she meets Shirase, a girl with few friends who's considered weirdo by the rest of the class and nicknamed "Antarctic" since it's all she ever talks about. Unlike her peers, Mari is moved by Shirase's dedication and decides that even though it's unlikely that high school girls will ever go to Antarctica, she's going to try to go with Shirase. Why This Anime Hits
Four girls go to Antarctica. What they're really running toward is the courage to start living.
Sora Yori doesn't earn its emotional payoff through tragedy — it earns it through sincerity. Each girl's reason for going to Antarctica is different, but they share the same fear: that life will pass them by while they wait for the 'right time.' The laptop scene in episode 12 works because the whole show has been building to the moment where running stops and grief finally catches up.
